we need a more compact and flexible way of displaying issues, typically with fewer columns per (Kanban) board and instead more issues in a row per column. Is this doable?

Hi Mischa,
Each row per column can hold only 1 issue. This is the point of issue ranking in an Agile board. You can, however, make use of swimlanes and/or quick filters to restrict the display of the board to your needs.
