It depends on how big and complex your data is to be frank.

We've done hundreds of migrations, of several different types, but I'll give you two examples from last week where we have timings:

  • A small client (think 10-20 projects, a few thousand issues, 25-50 users, that sort of size) - 4 minute export, 15 minute import
  • A large client (thousands of projects, issues in the millions, unlimited user licence) - 18 hour export, 27 hour import.  (Did some housekeeping and rationalisation, got it down to a 16 hour total, but still...)

The short answer is that we simply can't tell you.  It's going to be a function of the volume and complexity of your data, with the hardware running the export also having some influence.

Oops, hit enter too qucikly.

That's just the technical side.

The human and organisational side of it is a far bigger question.  If you're small enough, and don't have any complexities like heavily customised workflows, field or have added apps to your Server, then you can say "folks, when you come in on Monday, use the new url for Jira, it'll look a bit different, but it'll all work mostly the same".  There's not many that can do that.  You're going to need to look at if Cloud can do things the same way Server does for everything you're using it for.  Look at all the apps, look at the customisations - what are you going to lose/gain/change-the-way-of-doing, how are you going to adapt X thousand users to the new look, layout and changes of functionality?

The technical side can actually be simple.  The humans are going to take up a LOT more time than the technical delivery.
