How do I specify a particular workflow transition to be used in automation?

I have a workflow transition for ToDo->In Progress that validates the user has populate d certain fields.  I also have an All->In Progress workflow transition that does the same thing.

The problem is that I have an automation rule that says when a sub-task is put in progress, then put the parent in progress.  But it fails because the required fields in the parent are not populated and those workflow validations block it.

I'd like to either have the automation rule not subject to the workflow validations or create a workflow validation that I can specify the automation rule to use instead of the others.

How can I do this or otherwise resolve this situation?
