How do I clear a non-empty "Epic Link" field on an issue of type "Epic"?

Cory Bergquist September 6, 2022

In response to the upcoming Epic Link changes Atlassian announced, I ran a query to find any impacted issues in our Jira environment. Luckily, only 10 issues in total are impacted. Unluckily, there were some Epics that appeared in the output which is boggling my mind.

I know that this probably isn't an issue and that the update will inevitably "resolve" this, but I want to understand how an Epic could possibly have a non-empty Epic Link field, given that the field isn't even available to edit on Epics. How would I be able to clear these fields?

Here is an example query that produces the list of Epics:

type = Epic AND "Epic Link" is not EMPTY

The Epic may have a non-empty Epic Link field if it was previously a Story linked to an Epic and got converted to an Epic.

I had not even thought about this. This is likely the reason why. Thank you!
