Greenhopper - " is currently unavailable. This might be because an upgrade is in progress" - NPE in Atlassian.log

brian scott May 2, 2012

Hello friends -

Greenhopper fresh download of 5.9.6. Jira 5.0.3 on a windows environment w/mysql backend. I do have the latest upgrade manager.

I'm trying to get the Greenhopper component to install and keep on failing. The Internet tells me that the "Greenhopper is currently unavailable. This might be because an upgrade is in progress" is a fairly common problem. Note that this wasn't an upgrade so much as a straight up first time install attempt. None of the problems listed here: http://confluence.atlassian.com/pages/viewpage.action?pageId=278692866

appear to speak to my position.

From Atlassian-jira.log:

2012-05-03 10:58:12,833 pool-8-thread-4 ERROR admin 657x6351x1 1eq8k4n 10.102.5.34 /rest/plugins/1.0/ [sal.core.upgrade.DefaultPluginUpgradeManager] Error(s) encountered while upgrading plugin 'GreenHopper' on enable.

Followed immediately by a NPE. (Can attach the full stack if anyone is interested / didn't want to massively clutter first post).

Here are some snipets from the atlassian-greenhopper.log:

2012-05-03 10:58:10,161 Spring executor 29 INFO admin 657x6351x1 1eq8k4n 10.102.5.34 /rest/plugins/1.0/ [greenhopper.service.logging.LogSupport]

The funny thing is that in a development box environment on a standalone install, greenhopper went in AOK. It started failing on a .war install when we moved to a machine others could help play around with.

Can anyone help? Any insight is appreciated.

Thanks!

brian

Hi there,

This problem is possibly related to this KB:

https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/GHKB/GreenHopper+Upgrade+Fails+with+a+NullPointerException

Could you please verify if this is the case and check if this helps?

Hey Brian,

I had the same problem, when I looked at my logs/catalina.out file, I saw some mysql errors. This was because the mysql user I set up for JIRA did not have the correct privileges. In my case it was lagging ALTER and INDEX.

Maybe this helps.

Hi Everyone -

I thought I should add that we get partial interface changes when this happens; i.e.,

1) I get an 'Agile' button at the top of the toolbar, but no drop down options.

2) It shows up as an installed plug in in the plug in manager component.

3) Greenhopper verbiage shows up in the Dashboard

4) I have configuration options from Administration including general, templates, enabled probjects and license details.

5) New issue types like 'Epic' show up.

It looks like it got about 1/2 there.

Thanks.

brian
