Does Adding a Custom Field change / customize schema?

Does Adding a Custom Field change / customize schema? Create new intake form in Confluence and need Jira custom fields to do mapping. But Jira / Confluence Admins told "we do not customize schemas".

In jira the list of custom fields lives in the customfield table. Values for custom fields live in customfieldvalues IIRC. So the DB schema is not changed when custom fields are added, but if you have more than about 600 custom fields, it does affect Jira performance since more data is stored in the Lucene index.

Admins are right to push back on creating too many custom fields in general
