Creating JIRA Project Boards with Unique Issue Creation Criteria

Michael Davies May 24, 2022

Hello
I am looking for assistance to confirm if it is possible when creating JIRA Project boards that each board can have its own Issue types (templates with unique fields) and then also have their own workflow process?

Hi Michael - Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

Boards will be associated with a filter, which determines which projects will have issues show on the board. That project and/or projects found in the filter will have a workflow scheme(s) associated with it/them. Those are the statuses that will show up to be used by the board. Same is true for Issue Types - all tied to the project(s).

Now, having said all of that, I suspect you have a specific use case in mind which your question is based on. If so, can you share that scenario?

No, but yes.

A board is not a container for issues, is is a view of a selection, and has nothing to say about how issues are configured.  Boards can't carry the configuration of the available issue types or workflows.

Configuration is done within the thing that does contain issues - the project.  For any given project, you can have a list of available issue types, and within that, you can tell each issue type to use single workflow.

So, if you build two projects, one with say "bug, incident, fault" as the types and the other with "feature, accident, task", associating a different workflow with each issue type within the projects, you're all set to have different boards - tell one board to select from the first project and another board to select from the second.

In my opinion,  yes.

You can define which issues are displayed on the board when creating the board or in the board configuration using a filter. You can also specify in the filter that only one issue type from the project is displayed.

Which workflow the issuetype uses is defined in the project. The workflows can be different for each issue type in a project.
