When I want to add an issue to an epic from the issue, I edit the issue to edit the Epic link field. The drop down then also shows closed issue. I'v tried using the "mark as done" option, but it doesn't help. Is there a way to avoid seeing closed epic in the list?

I am sorry that Atlassian has decided not to implement a solution to this GHS-993. If you read this and you need a solution too, please go to the issue and add a comment, maybe we can get Atlassian to reconsider.
