Clicking create board button doesn't do anything.

When logged on as a Jira Administrator, I'm trying to create a new SCRUM board, for an existing project (Boards->View all Boards->Create board button->Create SCRUM board button->Board from an existing project).

After selecting the project to create the board from and giving the board a name, I'm clicking the Create board button. After clicking the button, the Cancel link is briefly replaced with a waiting symbol and about ½ a second later, the waiting symbol is replaced with the Cancel link again, however the board is never created and no error message is shown. Clicking the Create board button again, has the same effect and no board is created.

The same problem occurs if I'm logged on as a user who is registered as the project administrator, instead of being logged on as a Jira Administrator.

Can anyone tell me how to troubleshoot this problem, when no error message is displayed and the problem occurs for multiple users and using multiple web browsers (Tried with Chrome and Edge)?

PS) I'm using a self hosted Jira, version 7.4.0.

You'll be able to find the Jira logs using the information from this article:

Where are the application server logs?

If you trigger the fault again and tail your Jira logs, you can provide us the ERROR statements you see as well as their Caused by: messages below them. From this information, we can help you determine the issue.

Mr. Andersen,

No worries! Looks like it ended up being moved back to the issue.

One thing I noticed is it appears that you are currently running Microsoft SQL 2016. Only 2012 and 2014 are supported.

Here's my recommendation:

  1. Backup Jira as if you were migrating it to a new server.
  2. Do a reinstall of the Jira software, as you did when setting it up.
  3. Create a new database, so either MS SQL 2012/2014 or one of the databases listed in our Supported Platforms document.
  4. Continue from Step 4 of our migration documentation, starting up the new Jira (the old one may need to be stopped if the ports conflict), and import your data.

This corrects things two-fold: 

  1. I've seen other instances of this error resolved with a re-install.
  2. The database is unsupported so will inevitably cause similar issues until downgraded.

I have attempted to backup Jira, using the described XML method, but every time I attempted to create a new Jira installation, using the backup file (+data folder), the created database was missing about 30% of all database constraints (Primary keys and Identity specifications).

When creating a new Jira blank database, instead of using the XML backup, all of the necessary constrains would exist and I was able to create boards for the test projects.

I managed to resolve the problem by using the created database to generate a new blank Jira database (Without the initial content that Jira fills in, when initializing the database) and then use a 3rd party tool to copy all data from my old Jira database to the newly generated empty database.

This provided me with the database definition that Jira requires, while maintaining the contents of my old database.

With the new database, I am now able to create new boards, based on existing projects.
