Can you have a context on a non-custom field?

Kelly Nezwek June 17, 2021

Hi, all!

I would like to be able to have a context on the out-of-the-box "Priority" field in Jira.  I am setting up our requirements in Jama to flow over to Jira.  There will be a requirement in Jama that matches a requirement in Jira.  In Jama, the Priorities we have are "Must Have", "Should Have", and "Nice to Have".  I love being able to reuse fields vs creating new custom fields, so if I could just create a context for the "Priority" field in Jira, this would be ideal.

Is this possible?

Thanks!

Kelly

Hi @Kelly Nezwek

contexts on system field for Jira Cloud are not available. However, there is a Suggestion you could vote for. This ensures you are signalizing the request is of importance to you / your team.

Thanks, @Daniel Ebers !  While that's not the answer I wanted, it is still good to know where this functionality stands.  I put my vote on the suggestion you linked  :)

Kelly

Hi @Kelly Nezwek ,

You can add new priority values for the system field and create a priority scheme with these values. You can then associate the priority scheme to the project.

https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver0813/defining-priority-field-values-1027137771.html

You need to have JIRA admin privileges.

Thanks, @Niranjan !  This is super helpful!

Can you assign the priority schemes by issue type?  In the project, I want all issue types to use the out-of-the-box priority scheme, except for the custom issue type I created called "Jama Requirement" (which would use the Must Have, Should Have, etc. priorities).

Also, I'm not seeing how to configure Priority Schemes in Cloud.  I found this, but it's for server: https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver0813/associating-priorities-with-projects-1027137778.html

Hi @Kelly Nezwek ,

ah I did not notice that you are on Cloud. I do not believe that this feature of priority scheme is available in Cloud. There is an open feature request - https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JRACLOUD-3821

You can add new priorities though - https://support.atlassian.com/jira-cloud-administration/docs/configure-statuses-resolutions-and-priorities/

@Niranjan I would - but my question isn't yet solved or answered.  I am still curious if there is a way to have context on non-custom fields, as my problem still remains.
