Can we upgrade from Jira Software Server 7.3.2 to 8.19.1 directly or is there an interim step?

We want to upgrade to one of the latest versions of Jira Software Server to take advantage of the new features. We are currently on version 7.3.2 and want to upgrade to 8.19.1. We tried upgrading last weekend, but the Catalina folder wouldn't create and the Tomcat server would start a process, then it would die without starting the Jira web.

Do we need to do an interim upgrade to a higher version of 7.x then upgrade to the higher version of 8.x (8.19.1)?

Thanks.

Atlassian updated their Lucene index in version 8.0.  Technically, you can upgrade directly to 8.19.1, but it's healthier for your instance if you take an intermediary step to 8.0 between the two.
