Can we switch from hours to story points

My team have been using Jira for about 8 months now and assign tasks an estimated hours to complete value, however after reviewing the way we work it's agreed that story points would be a better fit for us.

My question is can we simply switch from hours to story points and what happens to those tasks that already have an hours value assigned?

None of the underlying data is changed or lost when you swap - the hours you've entered remain on the issue, but the board starts working off another field.  You can swap back at any time.  Your existing issues won't have estimates though, unless you enter something into the new selected field.
