Backlog not updating when adding story points, assign etc. to user stories

Thomas September 14, 2022

Hi!

When updating user stories on the backlog the backlog overview is not updated. For example: when we have our sprint planning we assign story points to the user stories but the backlog shows them as if there were no story points added. Even when we assign users to user stories the backlog is not updating.

Our current solution is to manually refresh the page. Is this seriously not implemented in Jira?

Thanks!

Welcome to the Atlassian Community!

No, Atlassian have not implemented any dynamic updates - Jira is already overloaded with dynamic javascript, and they have shied away from worsening its performance with dynamic updates in most places.

That's sad, the way we currently need to manage our backlog is not user friendly..

To play "devils advocate" here - why are you trying to manage your backlog in two different places?  That's the antithesis of Agile here .

Think this one through - our backlog should be managed by

  • your team doing refinement of individual issues on an ad-hoc basis (which you won't be looking at the backlog display for constantly)
  • your team sprint planning, where you'll all be looking at one screen with the backlog on it.

Dynamic updates are not needed, unless you decide to not be Agile.

Thanks for the reply. I don't understand "why are you trying to manage your backlog in two different places".

The backlog gives us a overview of which user stories we have planned. Because of Jira not updating the backlog when we make a change to a user story (sometimes it does randomly) it looks like the story points did not saved to the user story. Why is it showing in the backlog then if it not gets updated?

Because Atlassian have not implemented dynamic code that would update the backlog when you are editing the issues somewhere else.

It's not that i want to edit the issue somewhere else. I click on a issue in the backlog and then edit it by the sidebar, and it's not getting updated in the backlog list.. That's the problem.
