Validators & required fields

Hi all - looking for some guidance on this. I need to ensure our teams are inputting data in to the component field, I was thinking of having this done on a transition through a validator but I'm not sure how to go about doing that & when I looked at Scriptrunner I'm sure there's a way I just haven't found it yet.
