is it possible to use Service Desk for internal IT ticketing/tasks or do I need Jira Core additional to Service Desk?

Hi Shindy, absolutely! That is one of the primary uses of JSD. In fact when you go to create the project you will see Internal IT project template you can choose. BTW, if you have JSD you actually have Core as it is the underlying code for both JSD and JSW.
