Next-gen confusion?

Hi everyone!

I'm a newbie here, learning how to configure my Service Desk. Part of my issue is that I'm trying to manipulate the field layouts, but the classic layouts don't have the flexibility of the net gen layouts. So, my questions are these: 1)When will the next gen layouts come to Service Desk, and 2)how is the best way to configure the field layouts in Service Desk? The directions that I've been able to find aren't super intuitive... or am I just reading them wrong?
