How would I change the participant on a Service Managment Ticket to the reporter using automation?

We are using the API to create tickets within our service management project. Currently the reporter field is set to the user that is authenticating the API. We are able to add customers as participants to the tickets and are wondering if there is a way update the reporter from the participant field.
