Deleted Duplicate Custom Fields are still showing up as an option from Advance Search

andylee February 23, 2024

Hello,

I'm not sure if I deleted the Custom Field correctly.  We accidentally created multiple duplicate fields and when we realized it, we deleted them in the Request Type window on both the form as well as the side panel.  After deleting them, they are still displayed in Advance Search.  Is the a way to remove it from the Advance Search or did I delete the custom field incorrectly.

In my image, when I enter for "First Name" in the advance search bar there are 2 "First Name" options displayed.

Your help is appreciated.Screenshot 2024-02-23 at 9.20.26 AM.png

Thank you,

Andy

Hi @andylee .

in this situation here is what I do:

  • rename one of the dups so it is discernible from the other custom field. Example change one to "First Name DUP".
  • Run a query for all issues where:  "First Name DUP" is not EMPTY. You will want to copy the contents of First Name DUP in each issue to the "First Name" field as it will be the one that remains. This can be done a number of ways: manually 1-by-1, bulk edit(s), or a manual Automation rule to copy the contents over (my vote).
  • Verify the final results and when happy clear the contents of "First Name DUP" for all issues.
  • Delete the First Name Dup field

Hello Jack,

I've deleted that incorrect field but it is still displayed from within Advance Search.  I've deleted it from the Fields side panel of the Request Types screen.  Is there another location that I can delete this field?

Are you sure that field does not exist in other projects or maybe as a CMP custom field? Can you run a query for all issues using each variant and report findings?

Hi Andy,

Make sure you clear them out of the Trash.

@andylee

To supplement what @Jack Brickey and @John Funk stated, the key is to ensure that all the issues that have values against the duplicated field are handled properly (i.e. update those issues field values to the correct field).  Afterward, delete the duplicate field from the Settings >> Issues >> Custom fields UI from the system.

Once the above actions are completed, you will no longer see the duplicate field in the search functionality.

Hope this also helps.
