Delete Categories in Work Management

Ryan Hinz April 1, 2024

I do not see a way for Categories to be fully deleted from Jira.  I deleted some from my Work Management project, but they still show up when I group by Categories.

Can I or Atlassian remove the unused categories on the backend?

Hi @Ryan Hinz

I've seen other mentions of similar issues over the past few days for categories.

I would report this to Atlassian Support as a potential bug - you can do so from here: https://support.atlassian.com/contact/#

The only way I found to remove categories in work management was to expose the Category field in the list view, edit the category on an existing issue and then click on the trash can on the item I wanted to remove as an option. Jira doesn't fully remove it from the dropdown as it just disables it. Should be what you are looking for.

You can also edit the existing categories there too if you want to change the name.

If you need to edit all existing tickets that are set to the category value you are removing, I recommend using the bulk change tool.

This is a problem in my boards as well and is very confusing for users. I'm trying to just rename them so people know they aren't a real category (we use group by category extensively).

Hi @Ryan Hinz

This has been reported also by others - see e.g. this thread - so it indeed seems like a recent change. You may want to reach out to Atlassian Support about it.

Best,

Hannes

Hello @Ryan Hinz

This sounds more like a temporary bug. Have you deleted your cache and also tried using the another browser?

Ryan Hinz April 1, 2024

Thanks. I tried a different browser I never use and I still see the deleted categories when I group by in list view.  I do not see them on the drop down list when I select categories. I hope it is a bug that Atlassian will fix soon.

When something like that is happening and the expected behaviour is for the categories to be deleted right away, and they do still appear, this clearly indicates that this is a bug.

As @Ste Wright , you'd need to raise a ticket for Atlassian to ask for more information.
