Is there an app that will allow me to count the number of days since a bug was raised?
We have a product which has a lot of bugs and I want to use this as a motivator to increase the duration between bugs being raised.

As an alternative , I guess you can try Time in Status for Jira. The primary purpose is to help teams gather valuable data about the lifecycle of your issues in Jira. Add-on allows you to measure and visualize the time spent in each status, such as "Open," "In Progress," "In Review," and "Closed," and provide 7 types of reports to help you identify areas for improvement. Add-on developed by my team.
Also Time Between Statuses will be an option for you too. This add-on, which measures connections in the workflow, through a transition time in specific issues. You can count Cycle and Lead Time by setting start/stop and pause statuses in the configuration manager. To detail the calculation conditions you should select the first/last transition to/from status. This add-on also developed by my team.
Add-ons have a 30-day free trial version and free up to 10 users.

Thanks for the responses. I guess what I want is a count-up timer which gets reset as soon as a bug ticket is created. It should also keep a record of what is the average time between bug creation and the longest period of no bugs.

You could - for example - use the standard Gadgets "Average Age Chart" or "Average Time in Status" on a Dashboard. The latter is probably best for issues that not have been dispatched yet i.e. are still in the first status.
To only show bugs in a specific project, you need to create a respective filter first and use that for the Gadgets.

If you prefer to use a marketplace app, you can try Status Time Reports app developed by our team. It mainly provides reports and gadgets based on how much time passed in each status.

Update on May 9th, 2024: Time in Status by OBSS was recently rebranded as Timepiece. It is still the same capable app with the same dedicated team behind it. The answer below mentions the app as "Time in Status" but you can find the app in the marketplace as "Timepiece (formerly Time in Status)".

For your needs, Time in Status which is developed by my team at OBSS, is the tool I would highly recommend. It is available for both Jira Cloud and Data Center.
Time in Status mainly allows you to see how much time each issue spent on each status or each assignee.
Time in Status offers two report types for your case:
The first one is Status Duration report (please see the screenshot above) which shows how much time each issue spent on each status. You can combine the time for multiple statuses to get metrics like Response Time, Resolution Time, Lead Time etc.
As an alternative approach, Time in Status also has Duration Between Statuses report type which shows the duration between two specific statuses. This report type also allows the user to exclude the times for "pause" statuses.
For all numeric report types, you can calculate averages and sums of those durations grouped by the issue fields you select. The app calculates its reports using already existing Jira issue histories so when you install the app, you don't need to add anything to your issue workflows and you can get reports on your past issues as well. It supports both Company Managed and Team Managed projects for Jira Cloud.
Time in Status reports can be accessed through its own reporting page, dashboard gadgets, and issue view screen tabs. All these options can provide both calculated data tables and charts.

if you're open to solutions from the Atlassian Marketplace, you may want to check out the app that my team and I are working on, JXL for Jira.
JXL is a full-fledged spreadsheet/table view for your issues that allows viewing, inline-editing, sorting, and filtering by all your issue fields, much like you’d do in e.g. Excel or Google Sheets. It also comes with a number of so-called smart columns that aren’t natively available (including the time since created), as well as a number of advanced features, including support for (configurable) issue hierarchies, issue grouping by any issue field(s), sum-ups, or conditional formatting.
With these, you can build a report like the one below in just a couple of clicks:
Here, I'm reporting on the time since bugs of the various priorities have been created - but you can also group by any other issue field, or not group your issues at all. Note that this all just works - so there's no scripting or automation whatsoever required.
