Can Jira Service Management be used independently without a Jira Software subscription ?

Rajat Samseriya August 5, 2024

Hi Atlassian Community,

I have a question regarding the use of Jira Service Management. Our organization is interested in implementing Jira Service Management for our IT and customer support needs. However, we do not currently use Jira Software, nor do we have plans to subscribe to it in the near future.

1. Is it possible to use Jira Service Management as a standalone product without a Jira Software subscription ?

2. Are there any limitations or functionalities that we would miss out on by not having Jira Software ?

3. Would the administration and configuration of Jira Service Management be fully supported without Jira Software ?

We aim to streamline our service desk operations and want to ensure we are making an informed decision.

Thanks

Rajat Samseriya

Hi Rajat,

Welcome to Atlassian Community! I notice others have already quoted you with direct answers. On the same lines, I have acknowledged your questions inline -

1. Is it possible to use Jira Service Management as a standalone product without a Jira Software subscription ?

Yes, it is possible to use Jira Service Management (JSM) as a standalone product without a Jira Software subscription. JSM can function independently and offers a range of features for service management and customer support.

2. Are there any limitations or functionalities that we would miss out on by not having Jira Software ?

Yes, there are certain functionalities that you would miss out on if you only have Jira Service Management and not Jira Software. Jira Software is specifically designed for software development teams and it includes features like agile reporting, customizable workflows, and advanced development tool integrations which are not available in Jira Service Management

  • Jira Service Management, on the other hand, is designed for IT and service desk teams. It includes features like SLAs (Service Level Agreements), incident management, problem management, change management, and ITIL-certified processes which are not available in Jira Software.

3. Would the administration and configuration of Jira Service Management be fully supported without Jira Software.

The administration and configuration of Jira Service Management (JSM) can be fully supported without Jira Software. JSM is a standalone product and has its own set of administrative and configuration settings

  • For administration, there are resources available such as the "Get started with Jira Service Management for admins" guide which provides information on how to get started with JSM, including how to configure a company-managed project as an administrator, manage your assets and configuration items with Assets, and automate your customer support using the virtual agent
  • For configuration, the "Default configurations for Jira Service Management" guide provides a reference for the default configuration of your JSM projects, including custom fields, issue types, workflow, and permission scheme. It also explains how to manage users, groups, permissions, and roles in JSM, configure and manage projects, and customize JSM permissions

Hope the information is helpful.

Regards,

Anusha A
