Use Case for "Teams" within user profiles

What is Atlassian's vision for the usage of Teams within the user profile objects? Can these teams be references in issue filters? Can they be used within project automation rules?

It doesn't appear to add a whole lot of value so I'm wondering what the intended use case is just in case I'm missing something.

Team profile was added recently on Cloud in order to give context and share with other users what the team is working on. 

The teams were not made to use on a JQL or add on tickets, it’s basically just a profile of a group and there we can see tickets or pages where the team is involved.

The only difference between the teams for Jira and Confluence is that on a Confluence page you can mention a team.
