Just to make it clear that Insight Discovery tool is a separate tool (and you buy it separately) it collects the device information thru your network and passes it finally to a file(or mostly group of file) which Insight asset management can import. Both scan and import can work on a schedule base.
Discovery tool actually surprisingly versatile, collecting all sorts of info from any pc, server or any device connected to network with some limitations. Don't expect as the other professional tools targeting directly system management teams, but it does surprisingly collect a lot detail info like running services, installed applications with versions, etc..
Creating barcode and physically scanning and entering into your inventory is also something different process. You need to figure out your what kindda methodology you would follow. Some items would exist as single insight objects, while some others would be kept as in numbers in a single Insight object.
Consider the amount of memory for your server, as your the number of assets grows also.
