OAuth impersonation without the same user base

Thomas Konrath January 15, 2018

Hi,

We want to use the knowledge base feature of the JIRA ServiceDesk. But (as far as I know) this is only possible when:

1) the knowledge base space allows anonymous access

2) the servicedesk and the confluence are linked with Oauth (impersonation)

The first option is not possible for us, because the confluence is accessible directly from the internet and we do not want to give access to our knowledge base to everyone.

For the second option we have the problem, that for both system, we have a common user base (managed by LDAP) and user created manually. The manually added users are different in both system.

Will this be a problem to configure the link as impersonation in the case that it will mix up the manually users or even destroy them?

Thanks for more detail on this question.

Thomas

Hi Thomas,

The Jira Service Desk integration with Confluence to use as a knowledgebase was a feature that was originally created for our Cloud platform offerings.  In those platforms you have to has a shared userbase between confluence and jira, there is no other option in Cloud.

But in the Server versions, you can obviously have a split userbase between these two applications.   That can pose a serious problem for this specific integration feature to work correctly.   You can continue to use the Oauth with impersonation, however for the specific users that exist in Jira, but not Confluence (or have a different username/password for confluence), I would not expect this feature to work for those users.   These users should still be able to use Jira and confluence separately, but those users won't be able to utilize the integration features because the two applications won't be able to authenticate that user against the other application.

I would recommend checking out the additional KB: Guide to link Knowledge Base to JIRA Service Desk for unlicensed user.   It provides a lot more background on this feature and how we would recommend that you configure both Jira Server and Confluence Server to make this feature work as designed.

Please let us know if you have any additional questions or concerns about this.

Andy
