Migrate Jira Software Project to Jira ServiceDesk

Joakim Durehed November 14, 2016

Hi,

We can't import a "software type" project into an empty JIRA ServiceDesk project.

The error says: "The project with key 'APS' is a 'Software' project. You can not import this backup project, until the application providing this type has been installed and licensed."

We are migrating from JIRA Software to JIRA ServiceDesk and DO NOT wish to add Service Desk as an Add-on.

This sentence contradicts itself:

>We are migrating from JIRA Software to JIRA ServiceDesk and DO NOT wish to add Service Desk as an Add-on.

Do you want Service Desk or not?

If you mean that you don't want to install Software on the target server, that's fine, but what you'll need to do is either

  1. Go back to the source data and change the project type from Software to Business (or Service Desk if you have it) and re-export
  2. Go via a temporary dev server where you can make that change (so you don't affect production)
  3. Temporarily add Software to the target server, import, change the type, then remove it

Well, what i meant is that we do not wish to add Service Deks as an addon to our current JIRA Software instance. We are separating support and software projects.

Thanks for the input. Seems that Atlassian forgot about the use case to properly migrate projects between different Atlassian products.

The project and issue data is JIRA data.  You're not "migrating to another project", you're actually "removing service desk information from a project to turn it into a Software project".  Your "migration" path is really that you need to do that before you try to load it into a system that can't support it.

You don't need to be on different instances to have support and dev systems.  That's why there are project types.  I'm guessing you have good operational reasons for separating them though.
