Jira Dashboard crashes

IT_Department September 12, 2017

We upgraded our JAMF Pro this morning which also upgraded Apache Tomcat and Java.

JAMF Pro and JIRA use the same Apache Tomcat service including configuration. Since This upgrade occurred the JIRA service has failed to start, providing only a generic Windows error.

"Windows could not start the Atlassian JIRA on Local Computer. For more information, review the System Event Log. If this is a non-Microsoft service, contact the service vendor, and refer to service-specific error code 1."

System Event Log - Event 7024, Service Control Manager: The Atlassian JIRA service terminated with service-specific error Incorrect function..

Catalina Logs:

[2017-09-14 08:00:42] [error] [10628] Failed creating java C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_131\bin\server\jvm.dll
[2017-09-14 08:00:42] [error] [10628] The system cannot find the path specified.
[2017-09-14 08:00:42] [error] [10628] ServiceStart returned 1
[2017-09-14 08:00:42] [error] [10628] The system cannot find the path specified.

The servers Environment Variables are:

JAVA_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jdk1.8.0_144

JRE_HOME=C:\Program Files\Java\jre1.8.0_144

It was my understanding that JIRA used the values in the Environment Variables to define where the Java installation is located.

JAMF Pro relies on the same variables and it is functioning fine.

Thank you!

Could you try the following:

Unable to start Windows Service due to "Failed creating java jvm.dll" "The specified module could not be found"

The article is specifically for Confluence but you'll be able to modify the instructions to use with Jira.

Additionally, this article can help you in case you're running a 64 Bit version of Windows, which also might cause the issue:

Problems Installing JIRA applications as a service on Windows 64bit

Let us know how it goes or if you have any questions.

Kind Regards,
Shannon

Hi,

Can you show us what that generic Windows error is? Can you have a look at the JIRA logs and attempt to start again? Show us what errors show up in the logs themselves and it will help us to understand why Jira isn't starting properly.

Kind Regards,
Shannon
