Hi guys,

Our Sales & Marketing team started using JPD a few months ago. At the moment if feels like 'double work' as we add epics in Jira and connect them with ideas in JPD. For some roles within the team it makes sense (as Marketing Specialists/Product Owners) and feels natural but we are struggling with finding a best practice with JPD for roles as Partner Manager or Event Planner.
Can you guys share how you make use of it if at all in mentioned roles?

Hi @Frederike Häusel_resolution_

JPD is quite new and just came out of beta. I also looking for use cases and valid reasons to use it. May be someone from Atlassian can share some use cases around it.

How my team uses JPD/Epics

Essentially we use JPD for our ideas and to allow my team of PO's the ability to innovate and create vision which can then be reviewed for endorsement. The template we have for our Ideas includes summary and context info, benefits and uvp, pain points, how customers/users solve their problems now, what's important to them etc, and the planned iterative approach. Similar to a business case but lighter-touch than that or a lean/experience canvas.

We draw a clear line between JPD as the ideas bucket that may never get anywhere near a developer or the working project backlog/s (but we hope they do!) and Jira project epics that are on the developers' radars once the idea and/or budget has been endorsed.

In practice, JPD is used for:

  1. Collecting ideas that require some level of endorsement before they get anywhere near a 'live'  or working Jira project
  2. Grouping areas of affinity across single or multiple projects to identify a wholistic solution to a number of refinements, pain points, feature requests etc
  3. Using the Delivery links, we hook up individual issues and/or epics

How we use Epics

  1. Grouping endorsed scope in a live or working Jira project for developers to work on
  2. Breaking up endorsed scope for a phased or iterative planned delivery

That's our current implementation and it's working well for my team and for our business so far. hth

Thank you @Julie Daniel for sharing your insights on the topic. I think my biggest issue was that we added all ongoing epics to our JPD when we started setting JPD up. That did not resemble my understanding of the tool. In the end we will hopefully use it like you described - as an idea collection.

Hi @Frederike Häusel_resolution_! Thanks for your question - it's a good one! You can find some more discussion of this topic (how to use JPD within a marketing organization) here: https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Jira-Product-Discovery/Anybody-using-JPD-for-marketing/m-p/2402045#M1136.

I also think you would find this resource helpful: https://www.linkedin.com/posts/justinedavis8_external-how-we-built-the-unleash-conference-activity-7018988540302688256-z-j5?utm_source=share&utm_medium=member_desktop. It's a video of one of our VPs of Product Marketing talking about how our team used our tech stack (including JPD) to plan the Unleash event from earlier this year.

Hope this helps!
