Sub-tasks

I am a new Jira user and I have a project that has stories (issues) with sub-tasks.

We have 5 columns in the Project Kanban Board: Backlog, In Progress, Ready for Peer Review, Ready for User Review/Showcase and Done.Do my developers need to close each subtask 

Do my developers need to close each subtask and them move them through the workflow and do the same for each story?

Is there a way of recording work and status just in the story and the sub tasks inheriting the status?
