Should the search exclude minus sign work even if there is a space between it and the word?

Should the search exclude minus sign exclude the following word even if there is a space between the minus sign and the word?

Even if there are multiple spaces after the minus sign the following word will be excluded.

This is not how google works, the minus sign must be directly before the word/"term" to exclude it.

The reason I'm asking is when titles are being entered into Jira help desk the search feature is excluding certain words when a minus sign is being used to separate certain information.

If a page includes something separated with a minus sign such as

Ice cream - Chocolate

It is impossible to search for this.

Is this the intended behaviour?
