Retire an Issue type and still have the ability to lookup historical data with that 'Issue Type'.

The task that I have as an administrator of the core JIRA product is to remove an existing custom 'Issue type' called "Forms" from a project. We have extensively used that "Issue type" for that project and would like to retain Issues with that type for historical searches. This means we need the ability to remove "Forms" from the list in 'Create' Screen but to be able to hold on to Issues of the past under "Forms" Issue type.

We understand that the removal of 'Issue types' from projects involves editing the 'Issue Type scheme" which in turn involves migrating issues with "Forms" issue type to other existing Issue types(we have a bunch of them). We don't want to go that route as our intention is basically to retire an Issue type, not use it for future Issues but still need the ability to store and lookup the history under the same 'Issue type'.

Is this possible to achieve? Community's help is much appreciated.

No.  If you remove an issue type from a scheme, you have to swap all issues using it to an existing value.

There are some hacks and tricks you can play removing it from drop-downs, but they're easy to bypass and only work in some places.  A user will always be able to get around them quite easily (and sometimes purely by accident)

Thank you Nic. That helps.
