Replying to mentions

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Using Mentions

When I am mentioned, I received a 'Mention' filter notification every 5 minutes unless I reply to the comment I was mentioned in. Is there a way around this besides replying and cluttering the comments/page with comments?

I agree with Mike. There is no configuration to send email to mentions you have not replied to. 

What does the email look like? That can give us a clue on what and where is it coming from.

This sounds like someone configured an email subscription on a filter. I don't think this is standard JIRA behavior.
