Jira slow for users. Admin login seems fine though.

Sudhir Regmi November 16, 2015

Our users are reporting slowness with JIRA application for past couple of days. This started when we implemented a webhook for slack. Within couple of hours of adding it, there were number of users reporting slowness with Browsing projects and working with issues (Creating, Assiging and updating etc).
We disabled the plugin and waited few hours, but the slowness presisted. The slowness still remained even after restarting the JIRA Application.

We then deleted the webhook entry all together and restarted the application once again. However, it still seems slower than usual.

We have already tried the safe mode just to rule out the any plugin issues, which hasn't done any good.

Administering JIRA (anything under Admin login) seems snappy but when an administrator or an user tries to perform regular duties it's painfully slow. Therefore, it has been hard to figure out what exactly is causing it.

Any help on this issue is very much appreciated.

Hi Sudhir Regmi,

There could be a range of reasons for slowness of JIRA ranging from the kind of environment you are running JIRA to Out of memory errors and more. The most I have experienced is due to "Out of memory error of JVM".

you should take a look at this: https://confluence.atlassian.com/jira/increasing-jira-memory-5896.html  to increase available JVM memory.

You should also take a to look at your server logs for any errors during the period of slowness, so you can have some direction on how to fix the issue.

If you are sure that the only change that was done before the latency was the Slack Webhook, we can assume that there is a bug with it and it somehow persisted within the application even after you have removed it. How does your utilization looks like in the JIRA Administration Screen > System Info?

Can you check your JIRA application/catalina logs? Any hints if there's some unusual "processes" writing in the logs? Also, try generating a HAR Dump so you can somehow visualize where it is loading long (https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/KB/Generating+HAR+files+and+Analysing+Web+Requests). Try some of them here https://confluence.atlassian.com/display/KB/Performance+Troubleshooting+Tools+-+Best+Practice

If you can't still find it, generate a JIRA support zip and send it to Atlassian (support.atlassian.com).
