Jira does not start after upgrading

Tobias Ott May 28, 2018

Hi,

we upgraded our Jira Server from version jira-7.2.4 to jira-7.9.2. After the upgade was finished, the service is not starting anymore. The following message is displayed:

An existing index lock was found.

An index lock file was found unexpectedly. This occurs either because JIRA was not cleanly shutdown or because there is another instance of this JIRA installation currently running. Please ensure that no other instance of this JIRA installation is running and then remove the following lock file(s) and restart JIRA:

UtilConcurrentLock{lock=true, fullLockName=/var/atlassian/application-data/jira/caches/indexes/issues/write.lock}

Once JIRA restarts please reindex your data to ensure that indexes are up to date.

Do not delete the lock file(s) if there is another JIRA running with the same index directory, instead cleanly shutdown the other instance.

However, this lock file does not exist at all (not before starting, not during the starting process). The permissions are set properly (jira home is owned by jira:jira, recursively).

Any idea?

@Tobias OttJust  stop jira, kill  jira instance processes and restart jira  again.

kill all java processes (killall java on linux or search got through the task manager). Kill the jira service or run the stop-jira script.

Restart jira via service or the start-jira script.

It may work for you, please try:

Remove all 3rd party plugins. [https://community.atlassian.com/t5/Questions/JIRA-Startup-failed/qaq-p/108708]

Remove all lock files.

Remove .bundled-plugins and .osgi-plugins from installed-plugins and restart the jira.
