In the new Jira issue view you cannot change ticket type. =-/

Very frustrating when you cannot change the issue type with the new view.  I do not see a way to edit the default fields as the screens settings do not seem to effect this new view at all.

Hey @philosurfer – if you're using the new issue view (as described on https://confluence.atlassian.com/jiracorecloud/the-new-jira-issue-view-938040503.html) there is currently not a way to change issue type via a drop down menu like on the old design.

We suggest that you instead use the "Move" issue option, which should be accessible under the •• menu if you have permission to perform move operations.

As @Nic Brough -Adaptavist- mentioned, using the move operation is more reliable and can assist with resolving errors that occur with issue types that have different configuration.

If the new design currently doesn't meet your needs, you can go back to the old view by switching the feature off in your user profile. Click your avatar then "Your profile" and look for the "Labs" section.

@kai is there a way to force labs to be turned off for everyone in my org. ?   I have a lot of Jira Newbies to manage.  ;-)

@philosurfer unfortunately it can only be turned off at an individual user level at this time. We've recently included a link in the ••• menu on the new design directly take a user to their profile where it can be turned off – hopefully this helps.

Fields are nothing to do with the "new view".

To change the issue type, you need to either put the issue type on the "edit" screen for the issues, or use "move issue"  (You need to use move when the configuration of the old and new issue type might be incompatible)

If your screen settings "do not seem to affect the view", then you're either making changes that don't have any impact (e.g. adding a field that will be empty to the "view" screen won't do anything because Jira hides empty fields), or you're not changing the right screens.
