I'd like description style markup in custom field

I would like to have the same markup options in a custom field that I have in the description field. For example I would like to tag other team members and use bullets (with the *).  I see a reference that that the "Free Text" field used to fulfill that option but was taken away in JIRA 6.4.

How can I implement that in current JIRA formats?

In Field Configurations, you can select which kind of renderer is used for that field. I think that if you use the wiki markup renderer, that will do the trick.
