How to adjust a summation of tasks and sub-tasks time estimation?

alexxkey January 19, 2018

There is a summation only of tasks estimation time in backlog. Sub-tasks (I added time estimation fields to sub-tasks) are not summarized. Is it possible to adjust a summation of tasks and sub-tasks time estimations?

Hi Alex,

The estimations of subtasks are not being automatically factored into the estimations set on their respective parent issue.   This is something that users have asked for before in https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWSERVER-9167

The other detail here is that your subtasks are technically not part of that sprint.  The parent issue is, but that does not mean that the subtasks are also.  But in addition to that, subtasks are not expected to be added to sprints in Jira Software either.   But again, this is something that users have wanted from Jira Agile/Software before.  https://jira.atlassian.com/browse/JSWSERVER-5269 also has some more information about this.   From the comments of that, Shaun Clowes explains this in more details:

The subtasks are not expected to show up in the backlog itself as they are not primary backlog items.

The estimate that you see is the Original Estimate of the story. This is useful because team velocity is usually calculated based on original estimates at the story level (if you use sub-task level it is impossible to estimate how long portions of the backlog will take to execute if you have not broken them down to sub-tasks).
