We use versions in our projects quite religiously. However, recently I found out that some users are adding versions through the Affects and Fix Version fields because they are typing the wrong thing and then selecting okay. Which ends up adding the versions into the project versions section. We want to keep the adding of versions only to project admins and only through the admin section. Is there a way to turn off the ability to add versions through the field?
Adding new versions, even via the fields, are available only to admins. It seems some of your project admins are making that mistake.
Either train the project admins or use the "Select list renderer" for these fields. See https://confluence.atlassian.com/adminjiraserver071/configuring-renderers-802592570.html for more details.
Changing the renderer changes the way the field is displayed. You might want to test it first!
