Can't set look and feel via the base url

Thanks for taking your time to read my question.

i'm currently setting up a new jira instance (already have one set up for 2000 users), on linux with a postgres db.

i've noticed that i can't change the look and feel of my new instance in production/uat. When i click "apply" i do  see in the browser console that i get the following error

"Failed to load resource: net::ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE/rest/api/latest/application-properties/jira.lf.top.bgcolour" this is the behaviour we get when we go through the DNS name we've set up.

Now if i hit the host name and port 8443 i can do this action, any advice??

Issue is our external vip that fronts the DNS blocks by default PUT requests.
