JQL advanced search is not returning the desired end result

Hi,

I assume you want all issues where Jason is a reporter or assignee in conjunction with a status != DONE, right? So try using parenthesis around the (assignee OR reporter) part of the query as JQL query. Without them Jira will look for the either the reporter Jason Murphy OR assignee Jason Murphy and status != DONE
