use jira rest api to call external web service to populate custom field without using scriptrunner

We want to create an issue with various custom fields, that would all be list fields (single or multi select), with the data coming from an external database.  Is there a way to use the JIRA Rest api to call a web service that will return the data from the database and populate the custom fields.  We are using .NET. Can this be done just by hooking into the Jira api?  Has anyone done this?  I do not want to use Scriptrunner.

You can't do it.  The data held in list fields is options, held in the Jira database.

Two approaches

  • Copy the data from the external database into the list of options
  • Use one of the database field add-ons to pull from the external database

Either way, the REST calls then become standard "change data in custom field" calls.

Thanks for your response.

Copying the data from the external database into the list of options is not a viable option as the data in the external database is constantly changing.

in regards to the database field add-on are you referring to something like nFeed?  Can you please elaborate on this option?  Thanks!
