Jira onPremise search Limitations for excact/free text searcher

I am getting more and more complaints regading the limitations on searching in Jira, as we build up customfields (CF) etc....
In general, a CF is set to either "excact" or "free text"...
It seems that searching text~ only search in the "free text" configured fields, so when I have a serial number or hostname field that is "excact", it won't show up as found.
When searching in Jira UI in the search bar on the top right, is seems to be a text~only search also...
Finally, the wildcard possibilities on "*" are so limited compated to a lot of other search engines where "p*ter" will find "peter" etc etc...
Any knowlede on improvements or a better search engine comming up?
PS: I am still on 8.22.X
