"@" sign in Pidgin not allowed, but required as username. Any workaround?

This question is in reference to Atlassian Documentation: Connecting to HipChat using Pidgin

In Pidgin an "@" sign in the username is not allowed. Is my email address really the username? Or is there a workaround to enter the email address?

This widget could not be displayed.

If you're signing in via our generic XMPP interface, your username is actually a numeric string. Information about all the fields you need to sign in can be found at https://www.hipchat.com/account/xmpp
