You should be able to use the " /part " command when in the room to leave it.

Room actions

 ActionCommandExample
Enter an existing HipChat room
(HipChat web app only)
/join room-name/join IT Team
Leave the room you're currently in/part
Change the topic of the room you're currently in/topic new-topic/topic All things IT

I just joined HipChat, so please pardon my ignorance. Is leaving a room the same as leaving a team? What I mean is that when I signed up, HipChat said that it looks like there is already a team at my company, so I joined it. But I don't recognize any of the people on the team, so I want to leave this team.

No, leaving a room is different than leaving a group. I don't think there currently is a way to leave a team without deleting your account.

Hello, I have the same question. I want to leave a team. I see that I can "deactivate" my account, but I assume that if I try to reactivate, I will end up in the same team that I don't want to be in sad

To disable your account, you'll want to go to hipchat.com/account/deactivate. Once it's been disabled, you should be able to sign up for the proper team (either by creating a new one by going to hipchat.com/sign_up or by getting an invite from your existing group.

I get a 404 error when I go to the deactivate page.

404 when you go to either link

Please copy/paste the links, the Community website seems to have issues with links not starting with http(s). It thinks they are relative links.
