HipChat doesn't currently have a preference to scroll to the beginning of unread history. It's certainly something we've considered adding though. If you want to file it as an official suggestion, you can go to https://support.atlassian.com/hipchat/ and that will allow other users to vote/watch/comment on it (and helps us track interest in such a feature).
