If an employee was to leave, would said employee have rights to the data they entered into HipChat during their employment, or would those rights sit with the company?
Intellectual property right is hardly our specialty, but normally all creations done on corporate hardware during working time belongs to the employer, not the employee. You might however be better of talking to a lawyer that read law about this rather than a bunch of nerds that just read hacker news.
For particulars, you can view the Atlassian Customer Agreement (by which usage of HipChat is also bound) at https://www.atlassian.com/legal/customer-agreement.
