When email begins with number, user cannot login

So I think this may be a bug. We have a user who has an e-mail address that begins with a number.

He can activate, generate his password and login into our hipchat server.

However, if he signs out, he cannot sign back in, with the server reporting - 'invalid password'

If he resets his password using the forgot password link, it signs in for one time only again, but same issue - if he signs out, and signs back in, it comes up with invalid password.
