What is the difference between Hipchat server vs Hipchat Data Center ?

I have <200 people in the office and am looking into Hipchat as our IM tool. We have Jira ticketing software and Confluence installed in the office. Will the IM tool integrate well with our existing Atlassian products ?

We prefer self-hosting software and would like to know the difference between Hipcaht server and Hipchat Data Center.

What is the difference between Hipchat server vs Hipchat Data Center ?

I need to have live chat, live group chat, video group chat and group screen sharing with remote control on someone's screen. Will Hipchat server be able to do it ?

Why Hipchat Data Center needs 3 servers while Hipchat server needs only 1 ?

Hi, Grace!

In a nutshell, HipChat Data Center does everything that HipChat Server does with the additional points below:

  • High availability through clustering
  • Better performance scaling
  • Improved control and flexibility through external data stores (database, file storage, and cache system(

Some good articles that you can refer to to understand differences between these two product offerings:

While HipChat Server / Data Center can cater to all your requirements, we are yet to have the feature to perform remote control of the participants screen:

I encourage you to visit the suggestion page linked above and click the Vote and Watch links near the top right to show support for the feature. By doing this, it will ensure you are proactively informed of progress and updates going forward.

The purpose of having 3 nodes versus 1 is to provide high availability. In any case of node / hardware failure, users are still able to chat normally without any interruptions as the traffic is rerouted to the active working node while we can work on fixing the broken one before putting it back into the cluster.

We still offer a single node deployment for small scale group as mentioned in the HipChat Data Center Architecture. Hope that helps!
