We have created a room where we post a "to do" list - once a posted task is complete we would like to delete it -- don't see an option for that.

Another way to keep todo items is to integrate with wunderlist.

You can only delete messages currently from the History – I think you may have to be in the Browser version as well, I'm not sure. https://confluence.atlassian.com/hipchat/delete-messages-and-files-751698289.html
