WHY am I showing unvailable when I am logged in?

You should not show as unavailable when logging in. By default, the client will automatically set you to "online" when you initially sign in. It sounds like there might be a local network issue preventing your status from updating properly or a bug in the client application.

If you continue seeing this behavior, you can contact the support team via support@hipchat.com and they can help diagnose the problem with you, including grabbing logs if necessary.
