I have tried clearing cache and cookies, and also uninstalling the app on my mac. However, it continues to turn green when I log out. Can anyone offer suggestions on how to correct this?

It's possible that you have a stale session that is remaining logged in even after you log out with your current client. You can view your existing chat sessions (and log them out) by going to https://hipchat.com/account/sessions. If that still doesn't work, I'd recomment contacting the support team by going to https://support.atlassian.com/contact/
